একটা বিষয় আমরা অনেকেই জানিনা। তা হল, বিভিন্ন পরীক্ষায় prepositionএর  যেসব প্রশ্ন আসে তার অধিকাংশই আসে এই অংশ থেকে। এই অধ্যায়ে কোন নিয়ম কানুন নেই – কোন verbএর পর কোন prepositionবসবে সেটা কোন নিয়মে বাঁধা নেই। এগুলো ইংরেজি ভাষার নিজস্ব কতগুলো   বিষয়, যা বহুদিনের পড়া এবং প্রয়োগের ব্যাপার। আমরা কিছুটা গুছিয়ে উপস্থাপনের চেষ্টা করেছি যাতে অল্প সময়ের মধ্যে পড়ে মনে রাখা সম্ভব হয়। আশা করছি এগুলো আপনাদের কাজে আসবে।
 
 
Group verbs
1. Act:

  • Act on or upon(ক্ষতি করা)-such hard work will act upon your health
  • Act under(আদেশ অনুসারে কাজ করা)-he acted under the order of the headmaster
  • Act up to(অনুসারে কাজ করা)-he always act up to my advice

2. Ask:

  • Ask for (চাওয়া)-he asked for a loan of one thousand rupees.

3. Bear:

  • Bear away, off(জয় করিয়া লওয়া) -He bore away four prizes in the annual sports
  • Bear on(সম্পর্কিত হওয়া)-His remark does not bear on this subject
  • Bear out(সমর্থন করা)-His evidence does not bear out the charge
  • Bear up(মনের জোর বজায় রাখা)-His patience bore him up in that crisis
  • Bear with (সহ্য করা)-I cannot bear with such insults.

4. Blow:

  • Blow off (নির্গত)-The engine blows off carbon-di-oxide.
  • Blow out (নেভানো)-Blow out the lamp.

5. Break

  • Break away(ভাঙ্গিয়া বাহির হইয়া আসা)-The convict broke away from the prison
  • Break down (দুর্বল হইইয়া পড়া)-His health broke down for hard work.
  • Break in, on (বাধা দেওয়া)-You should not break in our conversation.
  • Break out(ছড়াইয়া পড়া )-Cholera broke out in the village
  • Break up (বন্ধ হওয়া)-Our school breaks up at 4p.m.

6. Bring:

  • Bring about (ঘটানো)-He tried to bring about a quarrel between them
  • Bring down (নিম্নমুখী করা)-The good harvest brought down the price of rice
  • Bring in দেওয়া)-His property brings him in Rs. 5000 year.
  • Bring off (রক্ষা করা)-He brought off the passengers on the wrecked dhip
  • Bring out (ছাপাইয়া প্রকাশ করা)-The publisher has brought out a new book.
  • Bring through (আরোগ্য লাভ করা)-The new medicine has brought the patient through
  • Bring up (প্রতিপালন করা)-She is brought up by her mother

7. Call:

  • Call at (কোন যায়গায় যাওয়া)-He called at my office yesterday.
  • Call for(চাওয়া)-He called for an explanation
  • Call forth(কাজে লাগানো )-You have to call forth all your energy in the ensuing examination
  • Call in(ডাকা)-please call in a doctor
  • Call off(উঠাইয়া লওয়া)- The strike was called off
  • Call on, upon(কাহারো সহিত দেখা করা)-He called on me in the office
  • Call out( আওয়াজ করা)- He called out for help
  • Call over(ডাকা)-The teacher called over the names of his pupils in the class
  • Call up(স্মরণ করা)-I cannot call up your name

8. Carry:

  • Carry away(স্থানান্তরিত করা)-The wounded man was carried away to the hospital
  • Carry away(মৃত্যু ঘটানো)-He was carried away by the current
  • Carry off (মৃত্যু ঘটানো)-Cholera has carried off one hundred people this year in the village
  • Carry off( জিতিয়া লওয়া)-He carried off all the prizes
  • Carry on(চালাইয়া যাওয়া)- He will carry on the business
  • Carry out(মান্য করা)-You must carry out my order
  • Carry over(হিসাবের জের পর পৃষ্ঠায় লইয়া যাওয়া)-This amount should be carried over to the next page
  • Carry through(ফলপ্রসূ হওয়া)-His hard labor will carry him through
  • Carry with( সহমত করা)-He carried the audience with him

 
9. Catch:

  • Catch at (সুযোগ গ্রহণ করা)-A drawing man catches at a straw.
  • Catch up (নাগালে ধরা)-India is trying to catch up with the advanced countries.

10. Come:

  • Come across (দেখিতে পাওয়া): How did the accident come about?
  • Come by (পাওয়া): How did you come by this picture?
  • Come of (জন্মগ্রহণ করা):He comes of a respectable family
  • Come off (সম্পন্ন হওয়া): Our annual sports came off yesterday.
  • Come to (পরিমাণ হওয়া): His income comes to our expectation.

11. Do:

  • Do for (কাজে লাগা): This cloth will do for a flag
  • Do up (গুছানো): He had to do up many rooms every day.
  • Do with (ব্যবহার করা): He has to do with all sorts of people.

12. Draw:

  • Draw in (সংকুচিত করা): Try to draw in your expenditure.
  • Draw off (টানিয়া ফেলা): She drew off her gloves.
  • Draw on (কাছাকাছি হওয়া): The festival is drawing on.

13. Fall:

  • Fall from (বাহির হওয়া): Not a word fell from his lips.
  • Fall off (কমিয়া যাওয়া): The quality of goods has fallen off.
  • Fall on (আক্রমন করা): The robbers fall on the passer-by.
  • Fall out (কলহ করা): Do not fall out with your friend.

14. Find:

  • Find out (খুঁজিয়া বাহির করা): He is always busy to find out his faults.

15. Get:

  • Get at (হাতের নাগালে পাওয়া): The books are locked up and I can’t get at them.
  • Get by (পাশ দিয়ে যাওয়া): Please let me get by.
  • Get into (উঠা): He got into the train.
  • Get through (সাফল্য লাভ করা): He got through the examination.

16. Give:

  • Give in (বশ্যতা স্বীকার করা): The enemies give in the last.
  • Give off (নিঃসৃত করা-The cooking coal gives off a lot of smoke.
  • Give up (পরিত্যাগ করা): Try to give up your bad habit.

17. Go:

  • Go away (প্রস্থান করা): He has gone away with all his belonging.
  • Go against (বিরুদ্ধে যাওয়া): This goes against the interest of the people.
  • Go beyond (অতিক্রম করা): You have gone beyond your limit.
  • Go by (অনুসারে চলা): I have to go by rules.
  • Go out (নিভিয়া যাওয়া): The light has gone out.
  • Go up (বৃদ্ধি পাওয়া): The cost of living has gone up.

18. Keep:

  • Keep in ( সংযত রাখা): They were kept in by rain.
  • Keep down (বশে রাখা): He could not keep down his anger.
  • Keep off (দূরে থাকা): Keep off the fire.
  • Keep on (চালাইয়া যাওয়া): He kept on shouting.
  • Keep up (বজায় রাখা): he always tries to keep up his reputation as a good teacher.

19. Look:

  • Look at (তাকানো): He is looking at the moon.
  • Look for (খোঁজা): He is looking for a job.
  • Look on (গণ্য করা): I look on him as my best friend.

 
20. Make:

  • Make away (হত্যা করা): He made away with himself.
  • Make off (পালাইয়া যাওয়া): The thief made off with ornaments.
  • Make over (হস্তান্তর করা): He has made over the charge to the secretary.
  • Make up for (ক্ষতিপূরণ করা): I must make up for the lost time.

21. Put:

  • Put by (সঞ্চয় করা): Put by something for your old age.
  • Put down (লেখা): Put down your name on the blackboard.
  • Put off (মুক্ত হওয়া): Put off your shoes.
  • Put on (পরিধান করা): Put on your dress.
  • Put on (ভান করা): He puts on an air of innocence.

22. run:

  • Run away (পলায়ন করা): He boys ran away on seeing the police.
  • Run into (জড়িত হওয়া): He ran into heavy debts.
  • Run on (চলিতে থাকা): The troubles will run on for few days.
  • Run over (গাড়ি চাপা পড়া): The old old man was run over by a car.

23. See:

  • See off (বিদায় জানাতে যাওয়া): I went to the station to see my friend off.
  • See through (বুঝিয়া ফেলা): I have seen through his plan.

24. Send:

  • Send for (ডাকিয়া পাঠানো): Please send for a doctor.
  • Send up (প্রতিযোগিতার জন্য পাঠানো):Fifty candidates have been sent up for examination.

25. Set:

  • Set aside (অগ্রাহ্য করা): Let us set aside all formalities.
  • Set by (সঞ্চয় করা): Set by something for old age.
  • Set in (শুরু করা): The rains have set in.
  • Set up (প্রতিষ্ঠা করা): The villagers have set up a school in the village.

26. Take:

  • Take after (সদৃশ হওয়া): She takes after her mother.
  • Take by(ধরা):He took the man by his neck
  • Take for (গন্য করা): I took him for a saint.
  • Take to (আসক্ত হওয়া): He has taken to drinking in his youth.

27. Work:

  • Work on (কাজ চালিয়ে যাওয়া): He worked on throughout the night.
  • Work out(সমাধান করা): He could not work out the sum.
  • Work at (সযত্নে কোন কিছুতে নিযুক্ত থাকা): He is working at the statue.
